In a candid interview with Rolling Stone magazine, the Easy on Me singer said that the experience of separation from husband Simon Konecki left her feeling “devastated” and “embarrassed”.
Adele and Konecki married in 2018, after dating since 2011 and having a child together - son Angelo James - in 2012. After months of speculation, it was revealed that the couple actually separated in the same year as they tied the knot. Divorce papers were filed in the US by the singer in 2019, and the divorce was finalised in March 2021.
The 33-year-old made multiple revelations to Rolling Stone about what was obviously a very difficult time in her life, explaining that she never felt “truly present” in the relationship. Making matters much worse was the public scrutiny of the split, which Adele says intensified her feelings of sadness.
She told the interviewer:
“It made me really sad,”
“Then having so many people that I don’t know know that I didn’t make that work … it f***ing devastated me. I was embarrassed.
“No one made me feel embarrassed, but you feel like you didn’t do a good job.”
Adele hopeful that new album will “explain divorce” to her son
Talking to children about divorce and helping them navigate an intensely difficult period in the wake of a family split can be hugely challenging. In Adele’s case, she’s hoping her new album 30 – dubbed her ‘divorce album’ – will help.
In one of her first interviews in five years, she recently explained to Vogue:
“My son has had a lot of questions. Really good questions, really innocent questions, that I just don’t have an answer for,”
“I just felt like I wanted to explain to him, through this record, when he’s in his twenties or thirties, who I am and why I voluntarily chose to dismantle his entire life in the pursuit of my own happiness.
“It made him really unhappy sometimes. And that’s a real wound for me that I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to heal.”
Following the divorce, Adele has relocated to Los Angeles and is in a new relationship with sports agent Rich Paul. But ex-husband Simon Konecki is reportedly living in the house just opposite the singer, so that the two can continue to co-parent their 9-year-old Angelo together.
