We’ve put together a handy at-a-glance list of the best places to turn to for divorce support:

1.    Relate. A UK charity dedicated to providing support to couples and individuals facing relationship problems. This includes advice, counselling, sex therapy, mediation, workshops and much more. You can get help in person, on the Relate website and over the phone.

2.    Resolution. This is a membership body of family law professionals, so it’s the perfect place to find a trusted solicitor to help you sort out divorce matters. Liverpool divorce solicitor Tracey Miller Family Law is a member of Resolution, and is committed to the organisation’s Code of Practice. This promotes a constructive, non-confrontational approach to family issues, which considers the needs of the whole family and aims to steer clear of the courtroom wherever possible.

3.    OnlyDads. A social enterprise supporting dads through separation, with non-legal information and advice. The problem-solving service aims to provide a neutral space, where you can start to make informed decisions.

4.    OnlyMums. A ‘sister’ service to OnlyDads, offering exactly the same neutral space, practical help and support – but with a focus on mums facing separation.

5.    The Centre for Separated Families. A national charity providing information and advice for anyone affected by divorce, with a particular focus on improving outcomes for children of separated families.

6.    Citizen’s Advice. This free online advice service can be a good starting point for anyone considering divorce. It offers straightforward information about the divorce process, plus links to further support services and help completing divorce paperwork.

7.    Family Mediation Council. If you’re considering mediation to help you work out post-divorce arrangements for your family and finances, the Family Mediation Council should be your first port of call. Here you can find information about how mediation works and find an FMC Registered Mediator.

8.    British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy. This is a good resource if you’re looking to find a therapist, or understand more about how therapy could help you (or your relationship).

9.    Gingerbread. This is a dedicated national charity working with single parent families, offering information and support before or after separation. There are practical tools to help you work out what to do as a single parent following divorce, along with support for your child and advice relating to legal issues.

10.    Samaritans. Divorce can be enormously difficult to deal with, but you don’t have to go through it alone. If you’re struggling, seek help from confidential emotional support services such as the Samaritans.
