Elon Musk divorces from his wife for the second time

It is not uncommon for couples to divorce more than once

Elon Musk, the South African Paypal entrepreneur and CEO of SpaceX, has divorced from his wife for a second time.

Musk married British actress Talulah Riley for the first time in 2010. The couple split after just one year of marriage. The entrepreneur announced the break up to the world, tweeting in 2012:

"It was an amazing four years. I will love you forever. You will make someone very happy one day".

Just 18 months later the happy person was Elon Musk himself as, in July 2013, the not-long- divorced couple got married once more.

However, second time round obviously didn't work out for Elon and Talulah as news emerged that the couple have officially separated for a second time.

According to reports, on New Year's Eve Elon Musk filed for divorce in a Los Angeles court.

An amicable separation

It is believed that the couple are separating amicably. It has also been reported that part of the financial settlement includes Musk giving Riley $16 million in cash and various other assets. Based on a prenuptial agreement, the divorce papers state the property will be split.

Elon Musk was previously married to Justine Musk, a Canadian novelist. Ms Musk once described herself as being Elon's "starter wife.”

Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton divorced twice

Although Musk and Riley are certainly not the first celebrity couple to have got divorced from each other more than once.

Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor were married and divorced twice. The world was captivated by what has been referred to as the "most turbulent love story ever told".

When Burton and Taylor met and fell in love on the set of Cleopatra in 1963, both were already married, Taylor to her fourth husband.

The couple got married for the first time in March 1964. The marriage lasted ten years. Despite finding new partners, Burton and Taylor tied the knot again in October 1975. But when Richard ran off with another women - his future wife Suzy Hunt - the couple divorced for a second time in 1976.

Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera

Another example of famous couples being unable to stay apart despite sharing a troubled relationship was Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. The prominent Mexican painter Diego Rivera was married to fellow painter Frida Kahlo. Kahlo was 20 years younger than Rivera, who was a well-known womaniser. The couple had a famously tumultuous marriage, both having affairs with other partners.

In 1939, Frida Kahlo divorced Riviera, after she found out he had been having an affair with her sister. The couple however quickly remarried and remained married until Kahlo died in 1955.

As we can see from these three couples, in the celebrity world, marriage, divorce and remarriage certainly occurs.

But does it happen in 'real life'?

In 2012, Nancy Kalish, professor emeritus at California State University and author of 'Lost and Found Lovers: Facts and Fantasies of Rekindled Romances', carried out research on rekindled romances and marriages.

In Kalish's study of 1,001 reunited couples from across the globe, six percent said they married, divorced and remarried the same person. 72 percent who the couples who remarried said that when they reunited they stayed together.

Whilst the majority of couples who divorce stay separated for good, a small percentage, simply cannot live without each other and decide to tie the knot more than once.
