The pair famously rekindled their romance in 2021. Dubbed ‘Bennifer’ by the press, the couple were in a relationship from 2002 to 2004, and were even engaged at one point.

Nearly 20 years later, Lopez and Affleck started dating again in 2021 and married in Las Vegas in 2022. This was followed by a more traditional ceremony in Georgia, where Affleck has a home.

The press and online gossip sites have been rife with rumours recently that the A-list couple were separating. This was partly prompted by Lopez cancelling her world tour (although this may also have been due to poor ticket sales).

It was also reported that the formerly loved-up couple spent some key dates apart – including their second wedding anniversary and Lopez’ 55^th birthday. Their Beverly Hills mansion was also put on the market.

But it was only on 20^th August 2024 that it was made official. Lopez filed for divorce in Los Angeles County Superior Court, reportedly the two-year anniversary of their Georgia wedding celebrations. Unusually, the singer and actor decided not to use a lawyer for the filing, making her technically ‘self-represented’.

She gave their official separation date as 26^th April, confirming the split rumours that have been dogging the pair for months. The reason given for the divorce was “irreconcilable differences”.  Neither Lopez or Affleck has made a public statement about the separation, although Lopez has thanked her fans for their support on an Instagram post.

Is there a prenup? 

While not many details are known about the divorce filing, one crucial piece of information seems to be missing – whether or not there is a prenuptial agreement in place.

People magazine has reported, according to a source, that there was no prenup in place when Lopez and Affleck eloped to Las Vegas in 2022. This is when they officially tied the knot.

This could mean that the divorce “has the potential to get ugly”, a quote from the same source allegedly close to the couple. With no clear arrangements in place and potentially millions of dollars of property, real estate and wealth to be sorted out, this could be far from a clear-cut divorce case. It even has the potential to drag on for months, especially if the pair can’t agree on how assets should be divided.

At present, Lopez and Affleck are believed to be in mediation talks with celebrity divorce attorney Laura Wasser. She has handled previous high-profile divorce cases for the likes of Kevin Costner and Kim Kardashian. It’s presumed the aim is to thrash out an agreement, but it remains to be seen whether that will be straightforward.
