Speaking to US journalist Andrew Sorkin, the Duke of Sussex said that he tries to ignore the constant speculation that his high-profile marriage is in trouble. He candidly spoke about the issue at the New York Times DealBook Summit, which is a series of interviews with some of the most consequential leaders and public figures in the worlds of business, politics and culture.
Rumours have dogged the couple since they were married in 2018, as is the case with many other celebrity couples. But they have intensified as recently, the pair have been spotted at events in the US (where they now live with children Archie and Lilibet) without each other. All these occasions are work initiatives however, so it appears that the speculation is unfounded.
At the DealBook summit, which is held annually and recorded live in New York City, Prince Harry addressed those online rumours, saying:
“Apparently we’ve bought or moved house maybe 10, 12 times. We’ve apparently divorced maybe 10, 12 times as well.
"So it’s just like, what? It’s hard to keep up with but that’s why you just sort of ignore it.”
He also said that it was likely that “trolls” would use his own words at this conference against him, and that event host Andrew Sorkin could also become a target for online abuse. He told Sorkin:
“I have no doubt that everything that we’ve spoken about today in the last, clocks on zero, 25 minutes, will be spun or twisted somehow against me, and maybe you, yourself, will be trolled relentlessly, and for that I can only apologise.”
On a far more positive note, the Duke spoke about how much he and his family are enjoying living in the US. They moved to the States from the UK in 2020, announcing that the couple would step back from their roles as senior royals and work towards becoming financially independent.
Harry – who has famously spoken out on numerous occasions against the tabloid press in the UK - said that his family enjoys a far greater level of privacy in the US. His children are also able to take part in activities they wouldn’t normally be able to do if living in the UK, due to the fame of their parents.
The bottom line from this public appearance? No, Harry and Meghan are not getting divorced.
