But with a positive mindset and a solid support network, it’s possible to adapt to your new lifestyle and start to embrace the opportunities that come with living alone. You get the chance to redefine yourself and live life on your own terms.
When you think about it, there are as many potential benefits as there are downsides. You’ll have complete freedom on how to spend your time, how to organise your home and even how to decorate it. There are more chances for quality ‘me’ time and quiet reflection, as well as full control over your schedule and a chance to develop skills of self-reliance.
It’s not going to be easy at first, but we’ve put together some handy tips to help you ease into the transition…
Develop new routines
A recent split can leave you feeling trapped in a vacuum, with only empty time in front of you. A routine will massively help with this, replacing the routines of your married life with new ones entirely of your own making. Start with the basics, including work and plenty of time for self-care, and plan regular time for socialising and fun. You might even want to sign up for that yoga session or cooking class you’ve always wanted to do.
Be pro-active in planning your social planning
Loneliness can be a concern when you’re newly separated. But there are ways to stave it off, and enjoy social interactions on your own terms. It all starts with changing your mindset with regards to being alone. Instead of seeing it as a negative, you can think of it as an opportunity to recharge your batteries, do things that make you happy and enjoy your own company.
Not everyone’s comfortable with too much alone time though You might need to make an extra effort to schedule in social events, and make a rule not to say no if you’re asked to anything (unless you really won’t enjoy it, of course).
Make the space your own
If your home is filled with the memories of your ex, even if it’s just of those tiny moments, habits and everyday things, this has the potential to make you feel sad.
This is why it could be an idea to buy some paint and new furniture, and do some decorating. It can be empowering and hugely enjoyable to transform your home, getting it just the way you like it. Have fun with colour and indulge yourself!
Don’t forget about self-care
We’ve mentioned it already, but self-care is one of the most important things you can actively practice after divorce.
You need to make a special effort to look after yourself, physically, mentally, and emotionally. Surround yourself with people who love you, make time for pampering, and consider therapy if you’re feeling overwhelmed by your feelings (which is normal after divorce, by the way).
