The 35-year-old Northern Irish golfer reportedly filed for divorce just a handful of days before the start of the PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky, which was scheduled to begin on 16th May 2024.

According to court records, he submitted a ‘petition for dissolution of marriage’ in Palm Beach County, Florida. At the time of the filing, a spokesperson for McIlroy issued just a short statement to explain what had happened, saying:

"Rory McIlroy's communications team confirmed today that a divorce has been filed.

"They stressed Rory's desire to ensure this difficult time is as respectful and amicable as possible. He will not be making any further comment."

McIlroy and sports administrator Erica Stoll had been married for seven years, after meeting in 2012 when she was working for the PGA of America at the Ryder Cup. The couple were married in Ireland in 2017 and had a child in 2020, a daughter named Poppy Kennedy McIlroy.

Divorce called off just weeks later

In a shock turn of events, it was recently revealed that the world no. 2 had changed his mind about the split, and had officially called off the divorce. This happened in the immediate build-up to the U.S. Open 2024 at Pinehurst Resort in North Carolina, which began on 13th June 2024.

When speaking to the media at the event, reporters noticed that McIlroy seemed in a noticeably upbeat mood. It was later revealed that court papers served in Florida had requested the voluntary dismissal of the case.

Asked for comment by the Guardian, McIlroy responded with a short statement:

“There have been rumours about my personal life recently, which is unfortunate. Responding to each rumour is a fool’s game.

“Over the past weeks, Erica and I have realised that our best future was as a family together. Thankfully, we have resolved our differences and look forward to a new beginning.”

So, as it stands, the divorce is off and the high-profile couple appear to be staying together. However, the reason for filing the divorce papers has never been made public, so it’s not clear whether the initial issues that caused the split have been resolved. It may be the case that there are further announcements to come.
