But is there any truth to this popular belief? A new study claims to have confirmed it, with data showing that the highest number of divorces happen at the seven-year mark.

Researchers working for Divorce Online looked at the length of marriage for all of its clients who obtained their final divorce decree in 2023. The total number was 1,753. Among other findings, it was revealed that couples who married in 2016 had the highest number of divorces finalised in the 2023 period. Researchers used AI tools to analyse the data and reach conclusions.

Commenting on the study, Divorce Online CEO Mark Keenan said:

“Our research sheds new light on marriage and divorce trends, confirming the seven-year itch phenomenon is real and particularly affects Generation X couples.”

Gen X most likely to experience divorce

Another interesting finding from the Divorce Online study was that people from Generation X (Gen X) were more likely to experience divorce than other age groups. These are people born between 1965 and 1980.

However, it’s worth bearing in mind that the research used data only from people who were clients of the website in 2023 – and who were more likely to seek a divorce through this kind of service.

The average age of divorce was found to be 43.9 years.

Offering a potential explanation for why Gen X are more likely to divorce than other age groups, Gill Chapell from Counselling Wiltshire said:

“Raised in an era where personal boundaries and expressing needs was not heard of, has left many to navigate their relationships without these crucial tools. Recognising unmet needs and respecting each other’s boundaries is crucial development for everyone. For Generation X it’s about evolving how we respect and connect, paving the way for deeper more fulfilling relationships, the reality is that sometimes that means starting over.”

Another interesting finding of the research was that there didn’t seem to be any noticeable differences in divorce rates based on where couples were based in the UK or further afield. This suggests that time (and the seven-year milestone) is the major factor at play, rather than other external factors such as cultural or regional differences.
