Supporters of ‘no fault’ divorce may have been disappointed when, after a year of inching closer to a historic change of the law, a general election got in the way. Parliament was shut down during campaigning and polling in December 2019, and the divorce bill along with much other legislation was temporarily abandoned.

January is known in the legal profession as ‘divorce month’, as it’s when solicitors typically receive the most enquiries about separation. In fact, the first Monday back at work – 6th January – is often called ‘divorce day’. This is when there is usually an annual spike in people looking into the divorce process.

A surprisingly large number of British people think that couples who live together are protected by the same rights as married couples. In fact, a survey carried out by the National Centre for Social Research found that 46% of the public equate cohabiting with the concept of common law marriage.

The decision to separate is often made after months or even years of problems within the relationship. It’s only natural then, that once this critical decision has been made, both parties will want the divorce to be finalised as soon as possible.
